Bitten by the SJP Bug
Tuesday, June 19th, 2007I adored Carrie Bradshaw’s outlandish get-ups and her penchant for shoes. And like Ms. Bradshaw, Sarah Jessica Parker, the woman who so accurately portrayed her for years and years, is no style amateur either. I was delighted to find out a few months ago that SJP was brainstorming up new line for “Steve & Barry’s” a store I had only stopped in once at the Block in Orange, thinking it was a great place for cute and funny tees for under $10. As the unveiling of the SJP Bitten line came closer, the media (including Queen Oprah) and web were all over it, but with more luke warm reviews than I anticipated. Some thoughts were that the clothes are “boring,” “cheap” (not just the price), and “nothing very special.”
This week, on my commute to work, I noticed a line at 9 AM that was forming outside where Old Navy used to be at the Beverly Connection. A large white banner hung saying “Steve & Barry’s Grand Opening.” I was so happy to know that unlike H&M where I waited EONS for its arrival in SoCal, the S&B would be just a hop and a skip away from work, a perfect lunch-hour excursion. When I got around to going there for the first time, I was pleasantly surprised how cute and well-made everything was, considering the price tag. For instance, the shirts have a curved bottom hemline, which you know isn’t just a quick and brainless sewing job. While there seemed to be an ample amount of merchandise, it was difficult to find smaller sizes (that’s what you get when you live in LA and everyone is a stick). I got a handful of tees and was giddy when my total rang up to a measly $40-something. So in my opinion, SJP did good, passing along a bit of her style to everyday teenage girls and women who have her discernable taste but not necessarily her enormous pocketbook.
