Woo Hoo! I’m a Simpson!

Saturday, August 11th, 2007

If you’re a kid of the 80’s or 90’s, for most of your life, you’ve grown with America’s most dysfunctional cartoon family, The Simpsons.  I can’t believe that after 18 years, the TV show is still popular AND funny.

What I found out recently is that there are 2 types of people out there…those who are a huge fan of The Simpsons and can recite countless lines from it and those who will catch the 11 pm syndicated repeat of the show when there’s nothing else on the telly.  I fall into the first camp while Ben is more in the second.  My brother falls into the first camp but on a tier above me.  He can probably answer most of the questions from the Simpsons version of Trivial Pursuit.  I still remember him wearing a “Bartman” shirt purchased at a swap meet until that thing became threadbare and unwearable.  The fact is that no one hates Homer, Marge, Bart, Lisa and Maggie.  You love them or like them, but no one can say they can’t stand them.  It takes something pretty special to create such a array of characters that have pretty much become part of the American culture for the past 2 decades.

When the movie came out on July 27, just like the rest of the country, I was excited to see if the small screen sitcom could translate on the big screen.  I was a little bummed I never got to step foot in one of the 7-Eleven-turned-Kwik-E-Mart before the movie’s release (btw, how smart was that marketing idea - whoever thought of it should get a raise).  However, I come to find out that another promotional gimmick that Burger King sponsors is the “Simpsonize Me” website.  Being the narcissist that I am, I was all over this and couldn’t wait to seen me drawn like a Springfield resident.  The site is easy-to-use, very interactive, and fun. (Now if only I can think of something like this for work…)  After about 20 minutes of uploading, choosing my facial features, body type and even my outfit (YAY!), I came up with what I think is a pretty good representation of my cartoonized self.

Kudos to everyone involved in the making of not only the Simpsons Movie but the brilliant promotion surrounding it.  And my review of the movie?  I thoroughly enjoyed it and give it 2 big enthusiast thumbs up (from my 4 digit yellow-colored Simpsonized hands).
