Okie Dokie Tokidoki

If there is one accessory that I get the most comments and compliments on, it’s my impossibly cute and bright Tokidoki LeSportsac purse.  While I have an original piece from his first collection from this very practical and pocket-loving handbag brand, subsequent collections came out showing how successful this line has been for LeSportsac.  I still remember when going on a family vacation, my mom would lug around her maroon LeSportsac purse (since it’s light, it’s perfect for travelling) and shudder at its functional utilitarian design.  Gone are the days of the boring monotone purses and hello to a designer from Italy to spice things up.

Tokidoki is the brainchild of artist Simone Legno and from the minute I saw his work, I knew there was a trend in the making.  I would describe it as Louis Vuitton’s Murakami collection on acid since it is much more elaborate and edgy.  Whether it’s the kewpie doll-esque characters, the sexy asian vixen, the cacti sporting girls, or the milk bottles that look like cows (huh?) you should never be surprised at what Legno comes up with.   While browsing through my Lucky the other day, I saw an ad for a limited edition Smashbox Cosmetics collection featuring Tokidoki.  To my heart’s delight I thought what a fantastic partnership which makes sense since Smashbox is known for their bold and high quality makeup.  Of course the juxtaposition of the sexy (asian temptress), cute (pink-haired kewpie), and edgy (cherry blossom with skull faces) imagery on the new makeup collection did not disappoint.  I am so glad that Legno stays true to his one-of-a-kind style.  So now I need to shamelessly support his work, buy some lip gloss, and stash them into my prized LeSportsac.

“tokidoki means sometimes in Japanese, because everyone waits for moments that change their destiny. tokidoki is the hope and hidden energy everyone has inside that gives us the strength to face each new day and dream that something positive, something magical will happen to us.” - Simone Legno; artist, Rome, Italy.
